Hungry for Change: Fixing the failures in food - House of Lords, Select Committee of Food, Poverty, Health and the Environment, 2020.

The HoL undertook an inquiry into the links between issues related to the UK food system —food, inequality, public health, and sustainability—to identify where interventions (policy, regulatory or fiscal) might be applied, or reinforced, to tackle the serious health, social and environmental damage that is being inflicted by the current food system. These themes are brought together in the resulting report under one central line of inquiry: how to ensure a healthy and sustainable diet can be accessed by everyone.

UK National Food Strategy

To address problems within the food system, ensure the security of our food supply and to maximise the benefits of the coming revolution in agricultural technology, the government proposes to develop a new integrated National Food Strategy. The purpose of the National Food Strategy is to set out a vision for the kind of food system we should be building for the future and a plan for how to achieve that vision.

The purpose of the National Food Strategy is to build on the work underway in the Agriculture Bill, the Environment Bill, the Fisheries Bill, the Industrial Strategy and the Childhood Obesity Plan to create an overarching strategy for government, designed to ensure our food system:

    • delivers safe, healthy, affordable food; regardless of where they live or how much they earn;
    • is robust in the face of future shocks;
    • restores and enhances the natural environment for the next generation in this country;
    • is built upon a resilient, sustainable and humane agriculture sector; and
    • is a thriving contributor to our urban and rural economies, delivering well-paid jobs and supporting innovative producers and manufacturers across the country;
    • does all of this in an efficient and cost-effective way.

Eating Better - Serving Better: every meal counts in a climate and nature emergency

Local diets have global impacts. Eating Better has developed a new guide and film to support local authorities to serve and source healthier, more sustainable meals

The science is clear: the global food system is a key driver of climate change, deforestation and catastrophic declines in biodiversity. Emissions from the food system are so large that they could, on their own, tip us over the Paris Agreement warming thresholds of 1.5° and 2°C, putting us on the path of dangerous climate change. We can’t tackle the climate, nature and public health crises without addressing food. With the challenges we face, every meal counts.
